School itself is cancelled because of \u201cextreme cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/5SPzK7\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1837\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/larakrupicka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Warming.png?resize=163%2C265\" alt=\"Warming\" width=\"163\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a>Yet I still plan on heading out to the gym today for a workout. In fact, I\u2019m pumped\u00a0about it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #000000;\">It sounds crazy. How can I be excited about a workout on a day like this?\u00a0And more importantly, how can <em>you<\/em> keep motivated toward <em>your<\/em> goals for 2015 when the conditions become less-than-optimal (as they certainly will at some point)?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"doc45\"><\/a>First of all, I\u2019m thrilled to finally have a gym membership. Joining a fitness center has been on my bucket list for a while. Signing up for membership\u00a0on January 2nd was only just the start of completing that bucket list goal. Now I need to use it regularly. It helps that I love the gym I joined.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #000000;\">What makes this gym so appealing\u00a0(besides the fact that it has an attached garage parking so I can avoid the weather) are the options I have for switching up my workouts. They have cardio machines, easy-to-use strength training equipment, a lap pool, and fitness classes (Pilates!). In the past I\u2019ve burnt out on doing the same thing over and over, so the opportunity to mix things up makes me want to keep going.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"doc46\"><\/a>But here\u2019s the real reason I\u2019m keyed up about going out in the arctic temps to work out: a visit to the gym is today\u2019s step toward a long-term goal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #000000;\">You see, it is also on my bucket list to order a cute retro dress from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eshakti.com\" target=\"_blank\">eShakti<\/a>. There is only one problem: my measurements don\u2019t match up with their sizes. I need to lose a few inches from my midsection for one of their dresses to fit me well. And I have an invitation to a wedding in late June that makes the perfect deadline for fitting into my dream dress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #000000;\">This is what goal-setting experts call a \u201cSMART\u201d goal:\u00a0<b>S<\/b>pecific (eShakti-dress-ready body),\u00a0<b>M<\/b>easurable (the size chart measurements for my goal size), Achievable (umm\u2026it seems like a reasonable goal to me),\u00a0<b>R<\/b>esults-focused (that dress again), and\u00a0<b>T<\/b>ime-bound (June 27<span class=\"s1\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span>\u00a0wedding).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #000000;\">There is only one problem with SMART goals &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scilogs.com\/the_science_talent_project\/goal-setting-for-scientifically-minded-people\/\">researchers have found\u00a0<\/a>that focusing on outcome alone does not guarantee success. Starting by focusing on the process first (in my case, working out 3-5 times per week), then shifting to focusing on the outcome (smaller dress size) appears to produce greater success than just focusing on the results alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #000000;\">As I advocate in\u00a0<a title=\"Family Bucket Lists Book\" href=\"http:\/\/larakrupicka.com\/family-bucket-lists-e-book\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Family Bucket Lists<\/i><\/a>, a life of adventure means enjoying the journey and not just the destination. In other words, focus on what is in front of you. Do today\u2019s work. Enjoy today\u2019s challenges and rewards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #000000;\">For me, there are 30 minutes on the elliptical (watching HDTV, which we don\u2019t get at home) to look forward to today. And that\u2019s worth a short drive in the cold.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #f7a032;\"><span style=\"color: #f7a032;\">What bucket list goal do you hope to accomplish this year?
